Do you experience dry skin and hair, difficulty losing weight or an abnormal increase in weight loss, or tingling and numbness in the hands? All of these symptoms are related to thyroid problems and imbalances.

The Thyroid, Small But Mighty

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly shaped gland at the base of the neck, weighing only 20 grams. Although it is small, its purpose is great! It maintains hormonal balance and regulates your metabolism, which includes all the chemical reactions involved in breaking down food to obtain energy as well as synthesizing the compounds needed by the cells. This is basically the process of maintain the living state of all the cells in the body. That’s a pretty important job! When your thyroid isn’t working properly, this foundational system is thrown off and you can experience a range of symptoms.

About 200 million people in the world have some form of thyroid disease. Thyroid problems include hyperthyroidism (occurs when too much thyroid hormone is produced), hypothyroidism (occurs when too little thyroid hormone is produced), thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland), thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules, and goiters. Many people are placed on medication to address their thyroid problems, but they still experience their symptoms. This is because thyroid problems don’t usually stem from one simple cause; there can be several factors getting in the way of proper thyroid function.

Causes of Thyroid Problems

The cause of thyroid problems can be biochemical. In the liver, the T4 thyroid hormone is converted into the active T3 hormone. However, if the liver is congested, toxic, or burdened, then sometimes the conversion into the active thyroid hormone doesn’t happen correctly. This can also be correlated with issues in the GI tract.

The cause can also be structural in nature. There was a study done on a group of woman who had lost the curve of their neck due a neglect in proper care after getting whiplash. The majority of these women ended up with thyroid issues. Interesting, right? This is because the nerve supply from the brain to the thyroid travels down through the skull and the neck. The thyroid draws its energy from the brain. When the neck doesn’t have the proper cure, this nerve supply gets diminished and the thyroid’s function suffers. This is like an appliance plugged into the wall with a corroding wire; it won’t work as it should!

The cause can also be connected to emotional stress. Based on Chinese medicine, and the mind-body components, emotional stress can affect thyroid function. The thyroid is part of the endocrine system which is involved in hormonal balance. Emotions and the endocrine system are so connected that they affect one another in a very real way.

The Autoimmunity Connection. The causes of thyroid problems are not always straightforward. Datis Kharrazian wrote a book on the Hashimoto’s Disease and Hypothyroidism called Why Do I have Thyroid Symptoms? It’s built for patients to be able to understand the thyroid and why many people still have thyroid symptoms when they’re already on thyroid medication. It’s been found that 90% of the people that have been diagnosed as having hypothyroidism also have autoimmune. This autoimmune challenge is called Hashimoto’s Disease, in which the immune system actually attacks the thyroid. In that case, the problem is not stemming from the thyroid but rather being caused by the autoimmunity. That underlying issue must be addressed.

As you can see, the cause of thyroid problems varies. It is important to find out what is going on and give the thyroid the love and care it needs so that your body can function normally. You can regain your energy and vitality!
